Oh! Reading!

LF: Mom, what is grift?
A: Um...G-R-I-F-T?
LF: G-R-I-E-F.
A: Oh! Grief! It's being sad and missing someone that's gone.
LF: Ok, thanks! (Goes back to reading)

Whew. Close call. Not quite ready to explain grift.
